Depression
What is Depression?
Depression is a state of sadness or “feeling low” that persists intensely for an extended period of time. Whilst diminished mood states are a common occurrence, chronic sadness can have a debilitating impact on thinking patterns, physical health and the ability to cope with difficulty.
Signs
Depression can manifest in physical and emotional changes, including:
-
Behavioural changes – increased isolation, lack of productivity, becoming withdrawn, relying on substances, lack of concentration, changes in routine
-
Feelings – Agitation, guilt, unhappiness, angry or frustrated
-
Physical – lethargy or tiredness, muscle pain, headaches, digestive or gut issues, changes in appetite, weight loss/gain
Treatment
Depression is a multifaceted problem that can be addressed through a range of treatments. In addition to medication, a mental health professional can use various talking therapies to understand your situation and equip you with ways to change your thought behaviours and develop coping behaviours. These include Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness and Compassionate Focused Therapy (CFT).
